The key here is to work with Google, not against it. When it comes to search engine optimization (SEO), what that means is focusing on keywords and content Google wants—instead of just throwing up a bunch of links and hoping for traffic.
And you know what they say: if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em. Instead of trying to trick Google’s algorithm into giving your site higher rankings, focus on creating relevant content and optimizing around popular topics.
Optimize for Clickbait
The secret of these headlines is that they entice you to click on them, which means they’ve done their job. Clickbait has been used in journalism for a long time, and now SEOs have started using it as well.
If you want more traffic from Google but don’t want your content flagged as spam, use clickbait in headlines when appropriate. You can even include a call-to-action (CTA) like This Will Blow Your Mind at the end of your post—just be sure it’s relevant!
Look at Algorithms, not Rankings
So, you’ve got a website and you want it to rank for some popular keywords—but you don’t know how. Don’t fret. Knowing how Google ranks websites is key when determining what you need to do to make your site appear higher in Google search results.
The first thing you should know is that Google actually ranks pages according to hundreds of ranking factors, not just one or two (those are called algorithms). Algorithms change over time—Google likes it that way.
Build Quality Backlinks
The first step toward ranking your website is to build links. As many as you can, of course. However, you want to be very careful that you don’t pay for these backlinks; paid backlinks can give Google (and other search engines) reason to doubt your credibility.

Target Local Keywords
Search engines also want you to tell them exactly what your site is about, so they can show it when people search for those terms. Start by targeting local keywords, which will help get your website ranked quickly in local searches.
Google’s Keyword Planner tool has a location option, which allows you to target only customers near your business. You can even specify an area around your address and control how many miles are in that radius.
Remember that people are likely looking for businesses like yours near where they live or work; if you target a keyword more than 10 miles away from their location, you may be showing up too far down on page one of their search results, when they’re most frustrated and ready to give up!
Create an Awesome Site
The most critical aspect of ranking your website is having an awesome site. If you are just getting started, then my recommendation is that you use WordPress to create a content-driven site with good UX.
Once you do that, there are lots of things you can do to improve search rankings. This post by Moz will give you a general overview of what’s involved.
Lastly, depending on how big your site is, it may also be worthwhile to pick up some basic technical skills related to backlinking (not at all hard).
Google has their own Webmaster Academy where they have written step-by-step guides for beginners as well as advanced techniques; if you have time, I highly recommend going through their entire course.
Use Alternative Traffic Sources
If you’re doing everything right, you shouldn’t have a problem ranking your website. But even with all that right, there are times when you just don’t get those sweet #1 rankings.
Instead of sitting around and wallowing in frustration, try expanding your search engine optimization efforts to include alternative traffic sources such as social media, other websites (like Wikipedia), email marketing, advertising and more.
If you can attract traffic from an outside source that isn’t crawling along like molasses on a cold winter day, then it shouldn’t be too hard for Google (or Bing) to notice.
Get Listed in Directories
Listing in directories is one of those how do I rank my website tricks that works. Research online to find appropriate, applicable directories in your niche; then write a good, basic description of your business and submit it. It’s not difficult or expensive.
In fact, there are many free listings available online, including paid directories where you can submit a listing for free. You may also want to consider hiring an SEO firm; they typically offer directory submissions as part of their packages.
Buy Anchor Text Links
I know what you’re thinking: Buying links from sites you don’t own violates Google’s Webmaster Guidelines. That’s true.
And that’s why I recommend using a service like Search Engine Journal (no, I don’t get anything for recommending them, they just happen to be great) as an intermediary between your site and another site selling a domain name with keyword-rich anchor text.
Then you can use that site’s domain name as part of your link building strategy without breaking any rules. As long as it looks natural, Google won’t penalize you in search results for buying links—it’ll still count them towards improving your search ranking and give you even more credibility.
Use SEO Plugins
Search Engine Optimization (SEO) plugins like Yoast and All in One SEO allow you to customize meta information for specific pages, including title tags and meta descriptions.
While Google does favor title tags that are only a few words long, longer ones tend to rank just as well—in fact, some long-form titles have even performed better than short-form ones.
Keep your meta descriptions between 150-160 characters (including spaces) and you should be in good shape! You can also use plugins like Advanced Title Tag or Whitespark’s On Page SEO Checker , which show you how many times keywords appear on each page of your site, along with other crucial info about how your page is speaking to search engines.
Do A Proper Keyword Research
To rank your website on Google, you first need to know what people are searching for. First, use your keyword research tools (or simply search) to see if anyone is even looking for information related to your site.
If no one is searching for it, then it will be hard to compete in search results. If people are searching for it, you may have a chance at ranking well in organic results when someone searches. If so, you want to find out how often they’re searching and which keyword phrases they use most often.
With that information, you can create an optimized web page around each one of those keywords and rank well on each specific phrase so that when someone searches using that term they’ll find yours easily.
Write The Best Quality Articles
The key to ranking a website on Google is to publish unique, relevant content that doesn’t have any major typos or errors. You’ll also want to focus on writing text that will serve both your readers and search engines.
Most people make three basic mistakes when it comes to ranking their websites: they write duplicate content; they write thin content; and/or they make factual errors.
Use Social Networking Sites
Ranking your website is just as easy as ranking any other social media site. If you can build a solid social media presence on one platform, you can easily spread that to another with some simple tools and techniques.
It all comes down to quality content and staying consistent—you have to keep pushing out new material on a regular basis if you want to remain relevant. Start building up your audience today by creating great content and sharing it frequently on social networking sites like Facebook, Quora, LinkedIn, Reddit, Pinterest and more.

The title tag, also known as your page’s heading, should be no more than 65 characters. The description tag, typically displayed underneath your title tag on search engine results pages (SERPs), should be no more than 155 characters.
Try to include important keyword phrases inside these fields; not only will they help you rank better but they’ll also help potential readers find your content.
Meta tags are one of those unseen elements that Google looks at while indexing your site. This can give you an edge if you know how to use them correctly.
Make an Outreach Plan & Reach Out
This can be one of your most important SEO tips for actually getting things done. Instead of picking an arbitrary date (e.g., Monday, January 1), write down how many days you need to rank.
If you want to reach Page 1 in four weeks, try setting out an outreach plan every Monday morning (or whenever) that gets more and more aggressive as each week goes by—reach out one site per day at first, then two sites per day, etc.
This will force you to put action behind your strategy instead of just thinking about it!
Do A/B Testing

Google’s mission statement is to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful, which means it wants its users—which include people, as well as computers—to be able to find what they are looking for easily.

Some backlinks are hard to get without great content; therefore, creating excellent content will better help with search engine rankings.
Optimize the Page’s Tags and Titles
Google’s algorithm weighs in heavily on how your page is tagged and how your title reflects on what it’s about. Google also values fresh content and one of your easiest ways to do that is by creating relevant and thoughtful tags, which will lead to more traffic.
Also take into consideration what terms people are searching for when they come across your site. If there’s not enough interest or desire around a certain topic, it might be time to find another angle. Keep up with Google’s latest algorithm updates so you don’t get caught off guard.
Optimize Individual Posts
First, identify what keywords and search terms users are using when they search for content that’s similar to yours. If you have an existing website, you can use Google’s Keyword Planner tool and/or other keyword research tools to find out how many people are searching for those terms each month.
Try adding some of these keywords as tags into your individual posts; if you’re not sure where to start, look at posts that rank on page one of Google for a search term similar to yours.
For example, if I’m trying to rank my WordPress plugin recommendation guide on page one for WordPress plugin recommendations, I might look at competitor analyses or customer reviews on High Rankings.
Optimize Content with Pictures, Videos, & Other Media
Content is king, but so is context. A recent study showed that search engines rank media-rich pages with more valuable content higher than others.
There’s plenty of ways you can spice up your content to be more media-rich, including using visuals like photos and videos, as well as incorporating data into your posts or even recording a podcast (or producing an audio file) for your site.
Make sure you’re helping people find what they want—and proving that you can give it to them—by prioritizing easily accessible media on your site. Put it at or near the top of your page so it’s easy for users to see and consume when they visit.
Improve User Experience
The #1 way to rank your website is by improving user experience. Doing so will help you generate more site traffic, boost conversion rates, and ultimately get more search engine optimization results.
Take time to make your webpages easy-to-use, with thoughtfully laid out content that makes it easy for users to find what they’re looking for quickly and easily.

So do what many SEO experts do: Audit your site structure for opportunities. Do you have primary topics with no subtopics? Can each of these top-level pages have its own set of secondary topics underneath?
Is every piece of content connected to at least one other piece of content? If not, think about how that can change.

Long form content also helps with your site’s visibility because Google prefers sites with lots of quality information over those with lots of ads or pop-ups that try and trick users into clicking on things.

One of the fastest ways you can get relevant links is to contact bloggers who cover similar topics. If you sell shoe care products, for example, and want some links from sites that discuss style, fashion or footwear trends, it would be smart to find contact information for those writers.
Maybe their email addresses are posted on their blogs—or you could try Googling them (for tips on how best to do that Google your own name). Reach out to those people with requests for interviews.
Ask if they’d consider writing about your business if you sent them a sample product. Offer to speak at any events they organize. Just don’t spam!
No one likes getting random messages that have nothing to do with what they actually write about or read about every day;
not only will anyone likely ignore you, but if enough people report you as an inappropriate sender (which any kind of unsolicited sales pitch will likely lead to), then major email providers like Gmail may block future messages from ever reaching inboxes across the board.
Promote on Social Media
The power of social media is truly amazing. With just a few clicks, you can spread your message virally across thousands of followers. Start promoting your website on social media using platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn.
Use these tools to gain more exposure for your website—this will help it rank faster and move up in search results.
Do a full site audit
Before you begin optimizing any site, it’s a good idea to conduct a full audit of your website. It may seem like extra work, but having a complete picture of what your site is made up of at its core will help you better understand where your SEO-based opportunities lie.
A comprehensive site audit helps reveal important insights about everything from server speed and Googlebot friendliness (yes, that’s an actual thing) to canonical tags and internal link signals.
Tools like Screaming Frog and DeepCrawl can both help give you insight into how search engines are seeing your site from an SEO perspective;
they’re quick and easy ways to get started with conducting web audits on multiple sites quickly and efficiently.
Focus on links and content
SEO and SEO-related strategies have evolved over time, with early strategies focused on spamming search engines.
Since then, Google has made multiple algorithm updates and release statements detailing their intentions of limiting low-quality content and improving ranking factors for user experience.
In light of these changes, it’s imperative that you use high-quality links that don’t seem artificial or automated.
If you want your website to rank quickly, focus on writing great content for users and seeking out relevant, quality links from similar businesses that share your mission.
Many people don’t think that video will rank their website, but actually, it does. YouTube is important for two reasons: (1) for branding and (2) for ranking yourself as an expert on certain topics. For example, if you wanted to rank as an SEO expert, you would create a series of SEO videos and upload them to YouTube. When people search Google for information about SEO tactics or techniques, your videos will show up at the top of their search results.

Find news outlets relevant to your industry, whether it be popular blogs or niche magazines. Then make contact with these sites and pitch a guest post related to your business area.
This is an amazing way to get links from high-quality sites quickly! With these kinds of articles, it’s very easy for readers to share content because they are engaging; share-worthy content helps drive traffic better than any other tactic!
However, finding good news media sites takes time; I recommend spending at least 30 minutes researching which sites are worth contacting before you start reaching out personally.
Once you find some good targets though, reach out fast so they don’t have time to publish anything similar before yours goes live!
You’re probably already on Instagram, and if you aren’t, it’s time to take it seriously. Use hashtags relevant to your business. Post beautiful photos of your offerings or team members (or both!).
Answer questions from followers, Engage with people who like and comment on your content, so they see you as an expert rather than just another company account. And be sure you’re also sharing images across all of your social media channels.
The most important thing is that Instagram is mobile-first; your updates should always look good on a smartphone screen (but think twice before posting just because something looks cool on one). Instagram Stories: It’s up there with Snapchat when it comes to engagement rates and impressions.

LinkedIn also has valuable tools that can help you find qualified leads for your new business, many of which will not even come from your own network.
It also provides important information about your target audience including keywords they use when searching for products or services like yours, as well as ways in which you can optimize your presence on other platforms such as Facebook and Twitter.
With more than 500 million members worldwide, LinkedIn offers several ways to engage with potential customers and clients without ever leaving your house.
The Twitter effect refers to how popular brands, products, celebrities and people get sudden boosts in popularity thanks to social media sites like Twitter. While there is no definite Twitter effect formula, one of the best ways to increase your chances of success is by creating compelling content that gets tweeted.
If you’re not sure what type of content will do well on Twitter, think about trending topics: Is there something new and exciting going on in your industry? Maybe it’s time for an expert roundup post?
If it’s something your audience can’t find anywhere else, then they’ll likely tweet about it. Whatever you do, make sure your tweets are easy for readers to share; otherwise they’ll be less likely pass them along.
Answer questions on Quora about your industry. This will help you drive traffic back to your website and show your expertise on specific topics.
It will also generate some great backlinks if you can provide quality answers that people find helpful, which in return help in ranking your website.
Optimizing for Local Searches
By optimizing your website for local searches, you can attract customers from within your area—an often-overlooked demographic.
When it comes to local searches, try using geographic keywords, such as county names and zip codes. Don’t neglect Google Maps either: make sure your business is marked on Maps, along with each of its individual locations.
If people see multiple locations on one map (and see other businesses nearby), they’re more likely to click through.
Create Social Media Accounts
Social media can be intimidating for new entrepreneurs—but it doesn’t have to be. A lot of people spend so much time trying to figure out what works and how, that they forget just how powerful social media is when used correctly.
You don’t need to become an expert at everything, but you do need to make sure your brand is represented on all of your key platforms.
If you’re going into business for yourself, chances are you already have most (if not all) of these accounts set up: Facebook profile page, LinkedIn company page and/or personal page, Twitter account(s), Google+ profile/page, Pinterest board(s), Instagram account(s), and any other relevant networks depending on your niche.

Get Links from Others
If you’re ranking on page one of Google today, it’s likely that you have enough links pointing at your site. However, backlinks are not permanent, and they can change any time.
So, it’s imperative that you keep getting new backlinks as often as possible. If you stop acquiring new links, your rankings will slowly slip away—but if you regularly acquire new ones (even better if they have high PageRank), you can keep your site atop page one of Google.
As an added bonus, keeping up with linking campaigns helps build relationships with other webmasters and search engine optimization companies.
Add Keywords to the Meta Description
Meta descriptions are used by search engines as short summaries of what your website is about. They usually appear below your main title and before your URL.
There are two important things you need to know about them:
1) they show up in search results, so if your keyword doesn’t appear here, it’s as good as not showing up at all, and
2) Google uses that first 160 characters or so for their snippet, which means you have less than 160 characters worth of room for keywords.
This can be challenging, especially if you’re optimizing for local SEO and have locations with multiple modifiers (like Alameda Chiropractor or San Jose Chiropractor). If that’s happening on your site, get ready to trim some fat from your meta description.
Optimize the Title Tag
One of the most important things you can do to optimize your site is ensure that every page has an appropriate title tag. It’s true that Google may not be giving as much weight to your title tag as it once did, but it’s still very important.
Optimizing your titles requires making sure they clearly and accurately describe what you have on that page, be clear about its intent (such as whether or not it’s a landing page) and incorporate keywords for search engine optimization purposes.
A good way to test your titles is using tools like Moz’s Open Site Explorer or SearchMetrics Ranking Checker.
Optimize Images Properly
Make sure your website has one or more images optimized for search engines. Also make sure that you optimize your image file names.
You can use an image editor like Photoshop, or a tool such as TinyJPG or FileOptimizer to quickly and easily resize, compress, and name image files. Optimizing every image will help boost SEO rankings on Google and Bing.
Set Up Robots.txt File Correctly
Robots.txt files are how search engines crawled and indexed your site and what you don’t want them crawling or indexing.
It’s not just for search engines though, as it also determines whether or not you get linked to from someone else’s site.
It may seem like it’s only relevant if you run an e-commerce site (which is often crawling with links and keywords), but having a robots.txt file can be beneficial even for non-e-commerce sites since it can keep people off your pages, protect your 404 pages, etc.
If you aren’t already familiar with Robots.txt files, now would be a good time to read up on them so that they’re ready when needed.
Create an XML Sitemap for Google Webmaster Tools Section
A sitemap is an XML file that lists all of your website’s pages and helps search engines like Google crawl and index them. It makes it easier for search engines to find your website pages, so you may be able to rank faster.
This step does not guarantee results, but it does help you move toward ranking your website. So even if nothing comes from doing a sitemap initially, at least you have one on file that you can use later when trying other SEO optimization tactics.
Add Breadcrumbs for Better Navigation
The breadcrumb link is a simple and useful navigational tool to add to your website. It allows visitors to see where they are in relation to your website’s hierarchy, which can help them understand what pages are within easy reach.
The breadcrumb is simply a series of linked text links that represent each level of your site’s navigation structure (like in an office building).
Each level is represented by a different piece of text that comes before or after breadcrumbs, and it usually consists of alphanumeric characters from A-Z.
Get Rid of Duplicate Pages on Your Website
One of the most effective ways to get a high-ranking website is by getting rid of duplicate pages. Take a look at your website, and you will probably find many pages that are duplicates of each other;

Headers are designed to give your users an idea of what they’re about to read, but all too often, people get in a hurry and forget about them. Or worse, use them just as a quick way to bold text.
Using H1 tags—your page’s main header—is important because it can help with readability and site structure. As long as you aren’t overdoing it (limit yourself to one per page), using these tags correctly will have a positive impact on how search engines view your content and rank it.
Do Proper Keyword Research
The best websites aren’t just written in a way that captures attention and focuses readers’ thoughts; they also effectively capture readers’ search queries.
That is, these sites are designed to appear at or near the top of relevant search results, and thus capture more reader attention. The better able you are to anticipate what people will type into a search engine when looking for your product or service, the more likely you are to rank high on their results pages.
If you can find another business that offers similar products or services and outranks you (and where it’s easy to mimic their tactics), it can be an excellent starting point for your keyword research.
It is no secret that keywords play a major role in ranking high in SERPs. Your title tag and meta description are perhaps your best friends when it comes to ranking higher, especially if you’re targeting long-tail keywords.
It is important to include targeted keywords within these elements as well as internal links. For example, if you were writing a post about dog training, it would be advantageous to not only include variations of dog training but also similar variations such as professional dog trainer and how to train my dog.
Using relevant subtopics of similar words will help with both SEO success and user engagement by giving people what they are searching for.
Keyword in H1 Tag
Not only is using your primary keyword in an H1 tag likely to help you improve search engine rankings, but it will also help visitors quickly understand what your page is about.

You could also use BuzzSumo as it lists top influencers tweeting about specific terms, but be aware that if you use BuzzSumo on its own, it might have trouble recognizing your site based on anchor text alone.
Although there are many ways to build links with free tools such as WordPress plugins and content building software such as Scribe, one effective way is outreach.

(1) paying for links, or (2) having people naturally link to your website.
